Something just didn’t seem right…

Standard

image

Marathon eating sessions, lots of gas, and momma super sore during and after nursing…even after 4 weeks.  Something was not right. Time to start searching on google. After a bit of digging, it seemed Bitty’s symptoms all pointed to a lip tie. As you can see in the picture, her upper frenulum was connected too close to the edge of her gum line and too tight. A frenulum is the flap of tissue that connects parts of the body to keep it from moving too far.

The  tightness of her frenulum make it difficult for her lips to flange out while nursing. This causes pain for me and will ultimately result in a decrease in my milk supply because she is not getting all she can effeciently….hence marathon feedings.

In the long run, an untreated lip tie can result in misalignment of teeth and speech issues.

So….this information led me and the hubs to the decision to have laser frenectomy done on Bitty. Talking with others and doing our own research we discovered that the procedure is minimally invasive. The dentist uses a laser to snip the frenulum after a local numbing agent is given. The procedure takes minutes. I will be able to nurse her immediately after the procedure to calm her and me for that matter.

I am nervous but I know that this will be beneficial for her health and well being. Appt is in 4 weeks….I will keep you posted!

Have you had any experiences with lip or tongue ties in your little one?? Please share!

Yep…you guessed it…boob. That is how sweet little Bitty Buns and I spend our days. Seeing as she is only 4 weeks old…I wouldn’t expect it any other way. There are things with this little one I have done and will do that I wish I had done with my others. I cherish my time with my kids and watching them grow up at an incredible speed is amazing!

The hubs and I are pretty darn sure that we are done having babies….which is a HUGE bittersweet feeling. I do not want to have another surgery but it makes me a bit sad to think of  not having “first” moments after Bitty.

Because of our decision, I am taking in every minute of every day. I am doing things much different than I did with the first two. I want to kick myself in the tail for not starting my crunchy routine earlier.

I LOVE breastfeeding. I love that I can take her out on errands and not have to worry about taking any bottles, formulas, etc with me. I have the two things I need with me all the time. I am REALLY REALLY hoping to nurse until 1 years old or longer. When I get discouraged or feeling the Boob Burnout,  Breastfeeding Place  is a great blog to read and get re-energized and motivated.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my pocket cloth diapers. I decided to go with Sun Baby Diapers (click name for link). They are reasonable and the prints are adorable.  I save money, save my little ones hinny and reduce our carbon footprint on the planet.

image

I also use cloth wipes and a wipe solution as opposed to disposable wipes. These have worked out awesomely! I bought the Bumkins Flannel Wipes from Amazon and the wipe solution is SUPER easy.

image

WIPE SOLUTION:

1 cup distilled water

1 TBSP Dr. Bronners Unscented Mild Castille Soap

1 TBSP Sweet Almond Oil

3 Drops Tea Tree Oil

2 Drops Lavender

Mix together and pour over wipes. I roll mine up in an empty wipes container…a tupperware will work as well.

I use and adore Young Living Essential oils for all my oily needs.

As I continue my crunchy mom journey…I will keep you posted.

What do you do that constitutes as “crunchy”?

It doesnt take long and it’s so worth it!!!!

Standard

In the past month, our household have made the following products:

– Deodorant

– Body wash

– Body lotion

– Dishwashing detergent

– Laundry detergent

Next in line is baby wash and baby lotion.

The process takes a bit of time BUT the outcome is WELL worth it. My family loves the products and our well being is getting stronger one application at a time.

What products do you make at home?????

Peace, love and chemical free

Standard

image

The hubs has been referring to me as his hippy wife lately. Why you ask? I guess because I have started making my own skin products. In my quest to become chemical free in our daily life…or as close as I can, I have researched online and asked around for some recipes that are easy and clean. The more I read and research, the more grossed out I get with all the gunk in products I use daily, on myself and my kids. The hubs is a great sport, but a slow convert. I inform but don’t pressure him into totally conversion!

My quest so far has included eliminating my household cleaning products that contain chemicals and only use all natural. My product of choice currently is Thieves household cleaner  by YoungLiving. I use it in every room for every cleaning purpose. I even use it to wash my fruits and veggies…that is how safe this product is.

As many of you already know, I have taken myself and the kiddos off all OTC meds. I use a combination of essential oils and TLC to combat whatever ailment they are encountering. Fingers crossed and prayers said, my children are and have been pretty darn healthy! I attribute that to allowing them to only drink water, occasionally a juice but they truly are not fans, and a wide variety of healthy food options.

Now to my current endeavors. This week I have made lotion from scratch and deodorant.

LOTION

I love the lotion recipe I chose. I use the one I found on WellnessMama blog, which happens to be one of my new favorite blogs. She has soooooo many homemade natural recipes to tryout.

This lotion recipe –> click HERE, is super simple, smells delicious and works great. I plan on making different variations and trying them out.

DEODORANT

As far as the deodorant recipe goes, I just made it today and am trying it out. I will keep you posted. My cousin and his wife swear by it and heck,  I am will to try it.

This particular deodorant recipe –> click HERE, was found on the CrunchyBetty blog, which just happens to be another awesome blog with natural homemade recipes.

Time will tell and I will definitely fill you all in. Next on my list is homemade laundry detergent.

I can’t wait to hear your questions and/or comments. Please don’t hesitate!!!

The dreaded stomach bug…what my family does instead of OTC meds.

Standard

It hits like a ton of bricks…out of no where!  Running to the bathroom, skin sweaty, pulse racing…. the dreaded stomach bug. In the past 24 hours, myself (at 6 months pregnant), the hubs and our 5 year old Monkey have all been hit!

At first sign I immediately began diffusing Thieves in my cool water diffuser. One of the benefits of Thieves, amongst literally hundreds, is its cleansing antiseptic abilities.

image

Thieves is not only diffused, but also is applied topically to the bottoms of the feet. This is a sure fire way to enter the body at rapid speed.

Another weapon in my oily medicine bag is peppermint.

image

Peppermint is known for its soothing ability for abdominal discomfort associated with bugs, travel sickness, or over indulgence at dinner. Simply massage a couple of drops on the abdomen periodically until feeling subsides. When applying to my kiddos, I dilute with some drops of a carrier oil such as coconut or almond oil.

What I love about switching over to essential oils is that I know what I am putting on mine and my families bodies and in our system. I can pronounce the ingredients and don’t have to question sketchy side effects.

Allergies are the devil…but we have learn to conquer them!

Standard

Prior to being introduced to Young Living Essential Oils, my family walked around like zombies in the allergy season. We were all so doped up on meds. NOW: we are conquering our allergies without the use of any over the counter medicines. Being pregnant, this works really well for me.  I would love to take you on a little journey of our daily regimen of oiling up.

5:45am – I am up! Earl Grey Tea made with a drop of lemon and a drop of Thieves to help boost immunity and protect me from all the yuk in the air

6am – showered and ready for my own concoction. I use a trio of Lemon, Peppermint and Lavender with Almond Oil ( 2 drops each) applied to chest and throat as well as  apply Joy behind my ears for an uplifting sense.

630am – KIDS are UP!!!! Chocolate Almond Milk in cups…kiddos watching cartoons and Thieves and Lemon in the diffuser.

7am – ready to get kids dressed, Almond Oil and a drop of Thieves and Lemon on the kids feet and lavender on their spines…..they are ready to conquer the day. If Buggy seems fussy, Peace and Calming is applied to her chest and Monkey gets a dab of Valor on his for courage to conquer the day, which is also great at night for dealing with monsters in closets or under beds!

We proceed through the day. When my day gets hectic, I run some Stress Away on my wrist for a calming effect. My co-workers know where it’s at and are free to use if the need arises. Working with 500 14-15 year olds, there is always a need for Stress Away!

At night, we repeat the same procedures we have in the morning. 30 minutes prior to each of our bed times, I diffuse Peace and Calming for a restful night sleep.

I am convinced….my husband is sold….and my kids LOVE the fact they do not have to taste anymore yucky medicine!  A huge shout out to Young Living and their amazing oils!

Disclaimer: I am only just a normal girl. I am not a doctor. I share what works with my family. Check out the tab “YOUNG LIVING ROCKS” for order details!

I am better off without you

Standard

I am not at all saying that there is nothing positive in my life. I am surrounded by it.  However, I am also exhausted with the negative parts in my life. Negative actions, negative words, and negative attitudes (mine definitely included). Therefore, I am on a quest to banish them forever.  Negativity….I am better off without you!

My sense of self will be the hardest to conquer. I have a great facade going on. I pretend that I am content with myself, but that would be an injustice. That would allude to the fact that I am done growing (physically, spiritually, and emotionally). There is always room for improvement and growth.

The negative, judgmental part of my being has to go away also. I try to be very unbiased and non-judgmental, however, human nature and inherent sin make it so easy. This is a part that needs constant attention.

Another difficulty will be people’s perception of the new real me I am so desperately needing to find. My activities will change. My outlook on myself and others will change and my perception of the world will change. I am hoping and praying that this will all be viewed as positive, however, there is no one that I need approval from except God and myself.

So…here’s to a new ME….better lifestyle, healthier living, positive attitude, non-judgmental and happier. If you see me and I am not doing this…call me out nicely. Accountability in numbers.

love peace happiness

My bloatation device is secure….

Standard

URGHHHHHHH. Ladies you can all feel my pain. It sucks being a woman during certain times.

The time is now! I eat good. I am active and once a month a new appendage is added to my body for about a week. I like to call it my bloatation device. This disgusting certain swelling graces me with its presence at all the wrong times.

It’s chilly outside and I would love to wear this cute mohair sweater but NOPE currently it looks as if I am 4 months preggers.

This adorable wrap dress would be perfect in this weather but NOPE bloaty bloaterson here can’t do that either!

Just started my 24 Day Challenge and what a spokesperson I am this week. Disclaimer….despite my current body shape I really am losing lbs!!!!

Sorry just had to get that off my stomach…I mean chest! (damn, why can’t that swell instead monthly????)

Take the time to just breathe

Standard

Life is so full…well, mine is anyhow.  I am learning how to not put too much on my plate, but I continually struggle with this.

I am a wife to a coach, we have two toddler children, full-time job, blogger, free-lance writer, friend, daughter…the list goes on.

This past week I came down with the flu and I had to learn to just be content with lying there…and trying to breathe.

My inner self was saying, YOU NEED TO GET UP AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR FAMILY WOMAN! and my body was saying PLEASE JUST RELAX.

When it came down to it, I sided with my body…at least for a day or two.

Life teaches us lessons everyday if you just let it. I now understand that the world will not crumble if the dishes are not done, kids are not bathed that night or dinner is take out instead of home cooked.

What does matter is that I take notice of life occurences that are happening all around. Don’t take the sunlight and its warmth for granted. Enjoy every giggle and every tear your  child makes. The kiss of your spouse is magical. A friendly hello is always welcoming. The smell of coffee (and wine) is enticing!

Life is good…it’s all about how you perceive it.

Massage Therapy During Cancer: Empowering Wellness – by guest blogger, Melanie L. Bowen

Standard

Nearly twelve million Americans are battling cancer at any given time, according to American Cancer Society statistics. Many of these individuals have bravely fought their disease for several years, through diagnosis, treatment, remission and relapse.

Cancer treatments are harsh. They load bodies with heavy toxins and unforgiving side effects. During the most stressful times of cancer, massage therapy can be a godsend.

Massage as Complementary Therapy

Many medical professionals recommend massage therapy as a complementary treatment for cancer patients. Without a doubt, therapeutic bodywork can greatly benefit these patients and their loved ones. While massage is not a cure-all for cancer or a stand-alone treatment, it can serve as nurturing healthcare in most cancer treatment plans.

Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapies and other treatments place a heavy burden on the body. Conventional treatments are successful because they aggressively target cancer cells and kill them before they can spread. This is a good thing. However, cancer treatments often cause debilitating side effects that are difficult to live with, and this is not so good. For many patients, the side effects of cancer treatment are worse than the cancer symptoms and pain.

Massage therapy does much to eliminate toxic chemicals, alleviate pain, reduce stress and minimize treatment symptoms. This often results in improved circulation, decreased blood pressure and reduced nausea and fatigue.

Swedish massage, reflexology and other relaxation techniques are the best ones to use during cancer treatment. When the treatment program ends, patients may consider lymph drainage, myotherapy, neuromuscular therapy and other trigger point techniques.

Anyone battling cancer can benefit from massage, whether they have metastatic breast cancer, mesothelioma or another form of the disease. Bodywork is possible even for hospitalized patients. Cranial-sacral therapy, Reiki and Therapeutic Touch are calming ways to cope with a hospital stay. The gentle touch provides comfort and reassurance during crucial moments in the cancer experience.

Massage as Empowerment

Talking to a doctor and massage therapist is the best place to start massage therapy. Physical manipulation can worsen some conditions, so discussing massage with a cancer doctor is important. Talking with a therapist about the disease and its treatment ensures that bodywork techniques are adapted to meet individual needs.

Massage is a healing therapy that empowers wellness. Cancer patients whose treatment plans include massage enjoy numerous health benefits. A caring touch can alleviate pain, nausea, stress, anxiety, anger, depression and all the other feelings and emotions that cancer evokes.

Regular massage therapy improves many body functions, from circulation and breathing to digestion and sleep. It also boosts the immune system, so the body can fight cancer growth and infection.

The calming experience of massage relaxes the body and mind. This relaxation improves mood, well-being and outlook. During a time when cancer seems to control everything, massage therapy empowers patients and gives them a better quality of life.

Thank you Melanie for your contribution

Those of you that follow my Tweets may have noticed my comments about a HBO documentary I am currently watching, The Weight of a Nation. I am in the first of 5 episodes and a fire has been lit. The statistics are atrocious and I want to do more to help this fast growing epidemic of obesity.
18% of children in the United States are overweight
68.8% of Americans are overweight or obese

Those of you who are not overweight, please don’t think that we are not in this problem together. Your health insurance premiums will increase and medical costs will skyrocket.

As a mom, I feel that I need to do my part in making sure my children do not become a statistic. I am chicken nugget and fish stick guilty. Knowing that fat is good for my kids’ brain development; however they will soon be moved to healthier options. The problem lies in what they are already accustom to. I know this process will be difficult at first, but I will need to persist and be patient….and creative.

As an Advocare distributor, my friends and family see that I care about my health and fitness. I share these products and the results.

One thing is for sure….my kids are active! We rarely just sit around and watch TV. There is lots of basketball, running, golf and swimming occurring in our household.

My dilemma lies outside my home. What can a normal girl do to reach more people and impact more lives? I try and set the best example for my students, only healthy snacks allowed in my classroom. Well, that is a start!

My heart longs for more! This is a topic I am praying about, meditating on, and will hopefully find my answer.

What do you do to make your mark on the health of our youth and the weight of our nation?

Here’s to a better me….

Those that know me know that I am always looking for the next best thing on nutrition. I was a vegetarian for nearly 2 years and I tried the vegan thing for about 6 months (too damn difficult in our society). I enjoy being healthy and trying my best to choose the healthiest option the majority of the time. I have heard a lot about raw food nutrition and juicing; however, I had never tried it.

Until today…. One of the Yoga instructors at the studio I go to in Granbury, Vitality Yoga, told our class about Barefoot Market, a juice bar and nutrition store. I had some time to kill today so I loaded the kids up and went to check it out. YUMMY!!! I had carrot, spinach, kale, and oranges juiced together. Delicious and it truly was filling. they also have a natural food market that is stocked with awesome goodies.

Thank goodness I liked it because we had already purchased a juicer two days ago….I’m patiently awaiting its arrival.

I also am about to start reading Natalia Rose’s Raw Food Detox Diet. I will keep you all posted and share recipes as I try out different blends. Please share if you have experiences as well!

AdvoCare Cleanse Phase Complete!

Standard

Today marks the last day of the 10 day cleanse phase in my Advocare 24 Day Challenge. I have to say that I have had a very successful 10 days. Let’s face it….10 days with no coffee or wine and all of my family members are still alive AND I managed to lose weight…I call that a success. In all seriousness, in 10 days, I have lost 4 pounds and who knows how many inches. I can actually fit into 2 of my favorite pre-pregnancy jeans. That in itself was worth it all!

I am not done though. I have the second leg of the challenge, which is the 14 day Max phase. This is the phase where I will continue to lose weight AND begin building up muscle. The cleanse was all about preparing my body for these next two weeks. Now…it is game on. I will make it a point to work out, eat right and benefit completely from this experience.

I vow to post pics of the transformation once it is all said and done. I am a bit nervous as it is quite humbling but I feel that I need to share this so that you can get the entire grasp of just how awesome these products are.

PS…Working on only 4 hours of sleep (thanks to a sweet ladybug that cried ALL night), I give great credit to Spark, the most amazing vitamin and amino acid loaded energy drink (yet without the nervous twitchy-feeling). Check out the rave reviews that it received from a caffeine junkie enthusiast. http://www.energyfiend.com/advocare-spark-energy

You don’t have to break the scale to enjoy…

Standard

It’s holiday season…which means an endless season of eating. If done in moderation, and making good choices most of the time, the season can be celebrated without breaking the scale.

Here are some pointers that I have found works well.

First – don’t deprive yourself of the treats offered – WIth that said, don’t have one of everything either. Look for moderation. Eat small portions of your food and taste samples of the dessert. I have found that if I deprive myself of goodies, then I end up bingeing because I can’t resist the temptation any longer.

Second – Don’t forget the H2O – Stay hydrated throughout the holiday season. Egg nog, hot totties and other adult beverages not only dehydrate you, but they are also empty calories, which can add up rather quickly. After every drink and before every meal, drink a large glass of water. You will stay hydrated and reduce the amount of calories you may consume at a meal.

Third – Make wise choices  – Many of us can’t wait for the holiday season because it is the only time of the year that Aunt Edna makes her world famous green bean casserole, or Grandma spends all day in the kitchen baking her delicious pies…that doesn’t mean that you have to partake in everything. Choose your selections wisely. Instead of piling your plate up the first round, break up holiday feasts into smaller meals. That way you enjoy the meal all day long.

Fourth – get up and move – Who says you have to veg out on the couch and watch football on TV all day during the holidays? Get your family and friends and start-up your own game of touch football outside. If it’s a snowy holiday season, go sledding. Find ways to burn off those excess calories.

Listed below are some links to yummy healthy choices for holiday dishes.

Baby Mint carrots

Fruit kabob with lemon lime dip

Spinach lasagna

Lemon custards with fresh blueberries

What are ways that you enjoy the holidays without breaking the scale? Please comment below.

“Moo”ve over meat

Standard

Tomorrow will officially mark 3 weeks the hubs and I have been meat free. I have also given up chose not to eat, for the most part eggs and dairy. I do not scrutinize labels, but if it mostly egg or dairy, count me out. Let me tell ya, I have never felt better. I have lost 7 lbs, sleep great every night, wake up energized and I never hit that 2pm slump. To make it even better, my 3 month old daughter, whom I nurse, has not projectiled spit up since the dietary switch.

It was suggested to me to watch “Forks over Knives” ummmm….if you never want to eat an animal byproduct again…watch this documentary. I highly suggested it for everyone. I had no idea some of the side effects of meat, dairy and eggs. WOW!!!!

What is so fantastic…the food we eat now. So many choices and yummy flavors. My evening cooking is like a fun science experiment. All the new things I have tried. I am so lucky and blessed to have a husband that will try anything I cook at least once. If he doesn’t like it, he kindly requests that I do not make that again. BUT at least he tries it. I can’t wait to see my blood work next time I visit the doctor.

I would love to share my recipes or you share yours!!!! Here’s to a great lifestyle of eating good for you foods!!! now I just need to find the time to workout! That’s a topic for another day!

Call me crazy…

Standard

I am always on the lookout for a better way of eating and fitness. Recently as many of you know I have found my niche in yoga. It truly makes me feel incredible every time I complete a practice. I find myself thinking about it, talking about it and reading about it ALL the time. (see previous posts) now I wish I could find the time to actually do it everyday.
Although I am feeling better with yoga, I am not feeling energized like I should. I am not dropping the ole LBS like I should…something needed to change.
Recently a friend of ours shared with us that he lost 30 lbs. and feels the best he has felt in a long long time. He has changed his eating style to completely vegan. Hmmmm… That got my wheels turning. I was vegetarian for 2 years in the past and that was great. Still not sure why I ever went back. Anyway… I like dairy but I’m not married to it. I could totally give up eggs. So call me crazy if you want but momma is going vegan.
I know this transformation may take a while as I learn what is and is not acceptable but I am so excited about all the amazing recipes I have found and the incredible health benefits that are headed in my direction. Check out this incredible article listing 57 reasons to become vegan. It blew my mind
I hope to share with you my journey. I hope that those in my immediate circle are accepting and understanding. This does not mean that i will stop shaving my arm pits or criticize you for your choices. This is about me. My hubs is incredibly supportive. I believe his words were ” you make it. I’ll eat it” sweet. Thanks babe!!!

So here’s to a new journey!

Any other vegans/vegetarians out there?
